Introduction of IEEE 1394
IEEE 1394 addresses the interconnection of both PC peripherals and Consumer electronics.
IEEE 1394 is the up-coming digital interface for audio/visual consumer electronic devices such as digital camcorders, digital VCRs, DVDs, and digital televisions
High-speed bus operating at data transfer rate of 100 to 400 Mbps depending on cable type.
Support peer-to-peer communication.
Support isochronous and asynchronous data transfer.
Support TCP/IP networking capability.
IEEE 1394 allows for automatic device detection and installation, providing a true plug-and-play experience for end users.
Supports Hot swapping

Why IEEE 1394
Today, more consumer electronic products than ever before are going digital ¡V especially video and home theater products. Full-frame digital video contains an immense amount of information. And it requires a constant frame rate to provide a high-quality image.
IEEE 1394 can handle up to 400 megabits per second. It is more than enough to handle digital video frame rates. In fact, it is the only interface available today that combines this kind of high speed with virtually foolproof ease of use.
