The world entered a new era with the announcement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the passing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Low-carbon economy, environmental protection and social responsibility have now become key issues for corporate advocacy. The fact that the sustainable development goals of more than 1000 enterprises worldwide are consistent with the SDGs demonstrated that businesses will become an important driving force behind global sustainable development.

The visions for GIGABYTE to promote sustainable development start from our corporate philosophy “Upgrade Your Life”. Then we proceed with the operational, product, environmental and social aspects to establish 4 promotion directions of sustainable development strategies. With the extraordinary research, development, and creativity, we developed the low-carbon technology to make GIGABYTE’s friendly products, service and the caring heart for the society actively create sustainable value for the environment and the society, reaching mutual benefits and common interests. In the meantime, short, medium and long-term strategies are used to gradually teach employees how business activities of the enterprise influence the environment and society. A return to basic business values and philosophy enables the negative impacts of an enterprise on the environment and society to be reduced through organizational management.

The global commitment and vision of future development encourage us to reconsider our influences on sustainable development. We link 6 Goals and 2 voluntary responded Goals from the 17 SDGs that have higher relevance and bigger influence on GIGABYTE’s operation. We also combine them with our promotion direction of sustainable strategies in the hope of expanding our horizons and ambition when promoting relative projects and conducts in the future. We hope to promote more conducts that have prospective meaning and influence on the society.

GIGABYTE’s Promotion Directions of Sustainable Development Strategies

Response to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In response to issues such as climate change, uneven regional development and uneven distribution of wealth, the United Nations issued 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets in 2015. The SDGs set out the global development vision and goals for 2030 with national governments and businesses all being asked to work together for the sustainable development of the planet.

As a member of the global village, GIGABYTE draws upon the corporate action guide of the SDG Compass to review our connection and contributions to the SDGs in terms of the value chain and voluntary engagement. As a manufacturer of computer hardware, GIGABYTE’s business activities play an important role in issues such as responsible consumption and production, and climate change. We also help drive employment and economic growth in Taiwan. Issues such as gender equality, diversity and career development, and supply chain management are all of great interest to GIGABYTE as well. For environmental and ecological conservation issues, GIGABYTE not only set up an environmental management system but also took part in voluntary initiatives such as the construction of the G-HOME Sustainable Eco-roof and formation of the Go Green Club. These voluntary initiatives demonstrate GIGABYTE’s total commitment to sustainable development.

Although GIGABYTE’s current activities make only a small contribution to the sustainability of the planet, we will continue to work hard in the future to promote more business activities and projects. Apart from putting our own core expertise to good use, we also hope that GIGABYTE’s voluntary contributions will bring more shared values to society.

Organization Promoting Sustainable Development
GIGABYTE set up the "WEEE/RoHS Committee" in 2005 in order to enhance operational risk management. The Committee was responsible for formulating measures in response to regulations (e.g. WEEE, RoHS), promotion of environmental issues in the plants, and training. In 2009, the Committee was renamed as "GIGABYTE Green Sustainability Development Committee" to serve as the decision making and operational organization on the promotion of sustainable development affairs in GIGABYTE . Moreover, sustainable development was confirmed as a future management goal in order to make a contribution to environmental, social and economic sustainability.

The executive president of GIGABYTE serves as chairman of the committee, with the sustainable development office director as the convener; the deputy conveners include the R&D heads of each business group and subsidiaries, chief engineer and head of the quality department. Cross-BU, cross-site and cross-subsidiary meetings are convened every month. Organizational representatives also continuously communicate with and collect feedback from stakeholders as part of routine operations to ensure proper management of stakeholder issues. The conclusions and messages from the monthly meetings are regularly reported to the GIGABYTE Office of the President during the joint monthly report. The information helps the management team track GIGABYTE’s progress on its commitment to sustainable development and implementation of the CSR policy. An annual report on CSR accomplishments for the current year as well as the promotion plan for the following year is made to the Board of directors every year to make CSR a part of the company's decision-making process and guide the promotion of green sustainable development initiatives at GIGABYTE.

The organizational chart is as follows:

History of CSR Promotion
GIGABYTE has been involved in the promotion of corporate social responsibility for 30 years. Everything from compliance with environmental laws, charity donations, construction of the eco-rooftop and the Green Action Plan 2.0 all highlight how GIGABYTE has gradually instilled the core values of corporate social responsibility in all GIGABYTE employees. Support has also evolved beyond purely monetary support to become a sharing of values that continues to expand our influence.

30 Years of CSR Promotion at GIGABYTE

GIGABYTE has followed the spirit of good corporate governance for many years and has deep comprehension of the symbiotic relationship between business and society. We are therefore not only responsible to our shareholders but also to all our stakeholders, including shareholders, customers, employees, suppliers, investors, communities, governments as well as non-government or non-profit organizations. We analyze GIGABYTE's responsibility to each type of stakeholder and utilize different methods of communication to show the stakeholders our sincerity and determination to seek continual improvement. Additionally, we also carry out practical analysis of stakeholders’ feedback to understand their level of interest in key issues lately. The information is used as a reference at the company's decision-making process in order to build consensus with internal and external stakeholders.

Large amounts of natural resources are required to sustain all business operations, production activities and personal lifestyles. Environmental resources are limited. Hence balancing the conservation of natural resources with the needs of economic development as well as adapting to climate change all become important global issues. GIGABYTE has long taken an interest in environmental issues. We track global environmental trends and spare no effort when it comes to the promotion of environmental protection initiatives. Our corporate environmental policies encompass the promotion of green supply chain management, enforcement of clean production, rigorous adherence to international laws and regulations, compliance with the local environmental laws of our sites around the world, non-use of restricted substances, as well as ensuring the health, safety and hygiene of the workplace environment. Product design and manufacturing comply with a number of requirements, including extended life-cycle and warranty periods, energy conservation, toxin-free, waste reduction and recycling. These are combined with our core capabilities to help protect the environment.

Green Management System
The configuration management approach has been adopted by GIGABYTE for the implementation of environmental and quality issues at each site. We believe that systematic management is the only effective way to respond to constantly changing green management issues. GIGABYTE passed ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification in 1998 and became the first brand-name system vendor to achieve IECQ QC 080000 standards certification in 2005. ISO 14064 and PAS 2050 have been progressively introduced since then to realize our environmental goal of low-carbon management.

Environmental Management Goal - 333 Reduction
The 333 Reduction Plan is drawn up by GIGABYTE to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. Setting a target of reducing carbon emissions, waste production and water consumption by 3% each year will help us meet the “Reduction” goal of Green Action Plan 2.0 Phase 1. Our internal management measures will help to ensure the sustainability of the Earth's resources. At the same time, GIGABYTE has also extended this goal to include our partners in the supply chain. The “Sustainable Supply Chain Partner Initiative” was launched in 2015 with key suppliers invited to take part. GIGABYTE also encouraged suppliers to join in the “Love the Planet through Reduction Alliance” and help promote the “333 Reduction Plan.” This will hopefully boost tangible contributions to environmental protection from our entire supply chain.
Enhancing Environmental Management and Awareness Among GIGABYTE Employees
GIGABYTE knows that the environment and enterprises are highly interdependent, and a sustainable enterprise cannot exist without a sustainable environment. Our initiatives are therefore aimed at offering true environmental benefits, improving energy and resource efficiency, developing eco-friendly products and promoting green consumption. (For Eco-Friendly Product Development please refer to Eco-Friendly Products)

We also practice various energy-saving and carbon reduction measures in our daily production and operation. By paying close attention to the trinity of ecology, living and production, we seek to make a start with internal environmental management and raise the environmental awareness of all GIGABYTE employees.

Environmental Education
All new recruits at GIGABYTE must undergo 1 ~ 2 hours of training on quality and environmental regulations. A series of courses of increasing difficulty are also provided based on the roles of each person to enhance their environmental awareness and boost our green product competitiveness.

Energy and Water Conservation
Warning signs are displayed near conference rooms to remind users to turn off the lights when they leave. Water-saving initiatives are displayed on washroom doors to encourage employees to conserve water.

5S Movement
All employees are expected to follow the 5S principles: Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize) and Shisuke (Sustain). Monthly audits and follow-ups on improvements are conducted to raise the safety awareness of employees in the workplace.

Cultivate employees' awareness of environmental protection
In 2018, our company completely started to ban disposable lunch boxes, tableware, cups, and straws in the staff canteen and offered rental steel tableware and cups to foster employees' ecological awareness and reduce waste. In 2019, the company expanded this practice to its external stores to build a friendly life circle at GIGABYTE, making it easier for employees to practice an eco-friendly lifestyle and drive environmental awareness at those stores.

• 2018 Traceless Diet Promotion at Staff Canteen (Press in Chinese)

• 2019 Traceless Diet Promotion - Swordsman of Plastic Reduction (Rule in Chinese)

As for the plants in China, since the Dongguan Plant and Ningbo Plant were founded in 1999 and 2003, the staff canteens have been providing reusable tableware for more than 10 years without interruption. Thus they can be seen as a model in following the new trend of waste reduction and plastic-free lifestyle in recent years. Moreover, the Dongguan Plant started to implement a weighing and pricing system for buffet meals in September 2019. By asking employees to determine the amount of food based on their need, it effectively reduces food waste and fosters the concept of cherishing food and food.

Sorting of Individual Rubbish
Rubbish sorting is now carried out by employees instead of the cleaning staff. Self-sorting helps employees think about the problem of waste before their next purchase and adopt necessary waste reduction measures. The aim is to achieve both waste reduction and effective reuse of resources.

Stairs Instead of Elevators
Signs are displayed in front of the elevators to encourage employees to take the stairs for their health.

Bicycle Parking
To encourage employees to cycle to work, bicycle parking areas are provided at the office buildings and equipped with bicycle racks for security.

Weekly Vegetarian Day
The longstanding “Weekly Vegetarian Day” event at GIGABYTE is a voluntary program where employees can order vegetarian lunch boxes instead to reduce GHG emissions due to meat consumption.

Video Conferencing
To reduce energy use from transportation, inter-plant training and conferences are now carried out through video conferencing.

Encouraging Employees to Participate in Outdoor Activities
GIGABYTE encourages employees to participate in activities such as jogging, hiking, mountain climbing, marathon running and swimming across the Sun Moon Lake. The activities not only improve employee’s health and the company's corporate image but also raise employees' environmental awareness through exposure to Mother Nature.

GIGABYTE has established a systematic eco-friendly product management process to actively ensure the environmental quality guarantees of our products and make continuous improvements to the products’ environmental quality as well. Environmental impact is taken into consideration at the product design phase. The “reduction of environmental burden” ideal is used as a guide to incorporate environmental design and the circular economy concept in the design phase. Materials selection, ease of disassembly, ease of maintenance and extended product life-cycle are used to reduce the use of raw materials and packaging. The reduction in waste and production costs translates into better economic sense and environmental protection. With the core belief “Upgrade Your Life”, we hope that all of our products are made from the viewpoint of the friendliness to the environment, user and society, and our innovative products can upgrade the life of you and me.
Eco-Friendly Product R&D
GIGABYTE has always provided innovative value from consumers’ perspective. We focus on developing products that offer exceptional performance, outstanding quality, superlative craftsmanship and a friendly interface. In its push to extend product life and reduce heat waste, GIGABYTE used design techniques such as all solid state capacitors, super durable materials, dynamic energy saver and 24-phase energy-saving design to realize lower temperatures. Our innovative R&D capability combined with energy-saving technologies hasve also produced new energy-saving products, including: the industry-leading AMP-UP Audio™ technology, extreme 4-Way display output and 2X Copper Inner Layer design. These reduce energy consumption and extend the product life cycle to optimize the use of resources. The introduction of the All Solid Caps motherboard in 2006 triggered a revolution in the motherboard industry and this has since become the industry standard. GIGABYTE is therefore the motherboard supplier with the most complete product range and highest sales ratio in the industry. Better Support and Extended Service Life
In 2011, GIGABYTE became the first in the industry to offer free 4-year warranties across its product line-up, one year more than the prevailing industry standards. After that, we even introduced a five-year warranty for certain modes of motherboards and graphical cards. GIGABYTE always takes the product life cycle into account from the design stage in order to reduce the amount of waste produced and protects the environment in the most practical way. Besides, cooperating with logistics operators and convenience stores, GIGABYTE starts to provide free delivery and collection services (only in Taiwan) for the products to be repaired in order to extend producer responsibility and protect the right of consumers. (For more information about the service please refer to GIGABYTE Official Website)
Hazardous Substance Management
GIGABYTE monitors international developments in environmental regulations to provide consumers with products that are not only safe but also comply with international regulations and customer requirements. These include the EU REACH Directive, EU Battery Directive, EU Packaging Directive, and China’s Measures for the Administration of the Restricted Use of Hazardous Substances Contained in Electrical and Electronic Products. All of our products, including the motherboards, VGA, CD-ROM drive, shell, and power supply, comply with the EU RoHS Directive. We establish the Harmful Chemical-Substances Requirements (HCSR) and ask our partners to comply with these regulations. We manage harmful substances systematically at different levels and incorporate the harmful substances to be controlled pursuant to different regulations in our controlled high-risk substances list in a timely manner to eliminate these substances as required by the law. In 2018, we updated the GIGABYTE Harmful Chemical-Substances Requirements (HCSR) to version 4.5. The new version upgraded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and its composite materials to Level A (banned substance). After confirming with each business group, GIGABYTE products no longer use TDCPP or TECP. After related regulations were promulgated in California, these two substances were added to the list in the company’s rules in order to better manage all chemical substances that potentially contain either of these substances. Follow-up actions will be taken afterward to ensure that all the suppliers meet the HCSR.

Waste Reduction
Reduction of resource consumption is the first step toward friendly products. (Raw) material and packaging as well as waste material and production cost may be reduced by selecting innovative materials, providing the products that are dissembled and repaired easily, and extending the service life of the product to realize a win-win situation for the economy and environment. We have set up a designated unit to investigate the material for all products and continuously adjust the (raw) material parameters to optimize and minimize the consumption. This not only lowers production costs but also reduces the pollution and waste. In addition to the reduction of (raw) materials used in the product, the packaging plays an indispensable role in the production. Being a kind of disposable materials, it protects the product and is the part of the product that first contact the consumer. We proactively search to find how to reduce the impact of the packaging on the environment and make the packaging friendlier to the environment and user. In recent years, GIGABYTE has spared no effort to improve the use of resources, including using the minimum product packaging, making use of recyclable materials, not using polystyrene for padding, limiting the use of hazardous substances in packaging, and use of recycling symbols. Furthermore, GIGABYTE successfully introduces eco-friendly packaging materials (RFP) to notebook products which are expected to increase transportation efficiency and reduce the product’s carbon footprint. These materials will be used with other products as well so that all products and their packaging materials can all be eco-friendly. (For more information about RFP please refer to Recycle Fiber of Plant (RFP) )

Climate change is now a well-known word worldwide. Some regions have even been subjected to the devastating power and threat of climate change already. In 2016, the Paris Agreement established the common international goal to keep the global temperature increase within 2°C or less compared with levels before industrialization. In its 2018 report, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated that climate heating up of less than 1.5°C may slow down the impacts of rising sea levels, floods, droughts, and famine on hundreds of millions of people. To reach the 1.5°C goal, global carbon emissions must be brought down to zero by 2050. This task cannot be accomplished through intergovernmental agreements and efforts alone, but is an issue that all companies, NGOs, societies, and even individuals must contribute, as we all rely on planet Earth for our survival.

GIGABYTE recognizes and agrees with this position so we have made the mitigation as well as adaptation to climate change an element of sustainable development. Action is being taken in GHG management and everyday operations to aggressively reduce our environmental impact and fulfill our corporate social responsibility.

Response Strategies to Climate Change
In response to the risks and opportunities posed by climate change, internal education on climate change risks and management is being conducted by GIGABYTE through the Green Sustainable Development Committee and the Green Action Plan. We are also engaged in climate change management through 5 key strategies.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target and Outcome
The goal of the 1st stage of greenhouse gas control in Taiwan has now already been approved, and the 13th Five-Year Plan for controlling greenhouse gas emission in China has also become a national policy that the local governments need to cooperate with. Moreover, countries around the world also have policies correspondent to the Paris Agreement. These all show that individual countries’ policies and laws related to greenhouse gas control are gradually completed. The development of the greenhouse gas emission control and potential risk requirement will affect the market opportunities and capacity layout of GIGABYTE’s locations. Although GIGABYTE is not directly controlled by relative laws and policies currently, we can expect the potential influence of the relative control in the future. As a member of the manufacturing industry, GIGABYTE needs to carry the responsibilities and obligations of reduction.
To respond to the trend of GHG managing requirements and potential risks, GIGABYTE has conducted greenhouse gas inventory annually since 2010 in accordance with ISO 14064-1. Also, we set up a long-term carbon reduction target, and enhance the employee involvement and build up internal consensus on carbon reduction through internal verifying procedures and reviewing reduction performance periodically.

In recent years, global attention on the extent of business ambition to cut emissions has kept rising, and various related initiatives and standards have been developed by creditable parties. In view of this, GIGABYTE decided to advance the target year of our emission reduction target from 2030 to 2025. Thus, the new target is cutting 50% of emissions from the 2009 level by 2025. GIGABYTE will make our all effort to achieving the more ambitious target!
The main source of GIGABYTE’s greenhouse gas emission is Scope 2 indirect emission. The gross greenhouse gas emission in 2018 (Scope 1 and Scope 2) was 27,663.92 tons CO2e. However, due to the expansion of operating scale and growth in product demand, the gross greenhouse emission of 2019 increased to 28,458.54 tons CO2e, reducing by 41.87% compared to the base year. GIGABYTE will continue to promote emission reduction plans, review the performance, and endeavor to reach the 2025 target.

Identification of Climate-related Risks and Opportunities
To effectively control the developing trend of climate change issues, we have designated personnel to focus on issues related to international climate change management, such as the laws and regulations in different countries, and corporate management trend. Moreover, through the framework suggested by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), we examine the frequency and intensity of potential climate-related risks and their derivative opportunities that are affecting or will affect GIGABYTE. The meetings are then held regularly to control the issues with higher climate-related risks in order to plan timely correspondent strategies and respond to international consensus. Further details on these climate issues and opportunities are given in the 2019 GIGABYTE Corporate Responsibility Report.

Extend Product Responsibility and Guard Society and the Planet together with YOU
GIGABYTE attaches great importance to producer responsibility to society and the environment. We do not support or tolerate any upstream partner that violates human rights and environmental well-being. Besides, by means of continually strengthening employee care, process safety, and environmental management measures on the front line, we insist on ensuring that the products and services to be provided to consumers and customers are safe, environmental-friendly, and of high quality. As for the demand side, GIGABYTE will also restrict or cease business with the third party until and unless we have high confidence that our products are not being used to violate human rights.

Product Environmental Impact Assessment
GIGABYTE established strict Supplier Management Requirements in accordance with HCSR, RBA Code of Conduct, and so on. In addition, in order to efficiently compare the environmental impacts of various raw materials and production processes, GIGABYTE has adopted the proven PAS 2050 system for the assessment of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services. After an initial carbon impact assessment, we carried out a full product carbon footprint assessment in 2016. Based on the characteristics of GIGABYTE products, we took reference from the methodology of the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD), and then gradually expanded the scope from our products themselves to their impacts on land/water acidification and air quality (PM2.5). In 2019, the scope of disclosure extended again to cover 12 categories in order to more comprehensively quantify the environmental, social, and health impacts of the product. The implementation strategies and results of our product life cycle assessment project are as follows:
The disclosures through the LCA platform and product environmental reports enable our R&D staff to quickly check the environmental impacts of all raw materials and production processes and identify hot spots for improvement and raise the efficiency and efficacy of our green product development.

Product Environmental Report
Through a product environmental report, one can find the environmental impacts of a product causes throughout its lifetime (material acquisition, manufacturing, transportation, use, disposal, etc. ). In addition, one can also learn about the recycling methods, or participate in the latest CSR activities held by GIGABYTE. Let us start with understanding, and take the first step to protect the environment!

Climate Change Air Quality Ecological Balance Human Health
By means of Greenhouse gas emission assessment to understand the emissions from the product at each phase throughout its lifetime By means of the equivalent assessment of particulate matter equivalent, CFC, and photochemical ozone to understand the impact on air quality the product at each phase throughout its lifetime By means of the equivalent assessment of land/water acidification and mineral depletion to understand the effect on environmental acidification of the product at each phase throughout its lifetime By means of toxicity equivalent assessment to understand the impact of the product on causing cancers and non-cancer effects.

GIGABYTE has numerous product lines, thus the impact assessment is still in progress. The followings are the partial results that have been completed. GIGABYTE will keep endeavoring to achieve the goal of full product disclosure, and look forward to working together with the industry to strengthen the transparency of product information.

As from 2019, the second version of Product Environmental Report that covers 12 environmental aspects is released

The decline of living quality and land productivity resulted from environmental deterioration will lead to unstable social order and structure. In respect that GIGABYTE hopes to strictly assess the impacts of our products on the environment, society, and human health. This is not only to make a contribution to the sustainability of the planet but also to ensure human rights to survive. In the future, we will keep extending the scope of supervision and thoroughly track the product flow to prevent our products from being used to violate human rights.
Quality and Environmental Policies
The introduction of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 together with IECQ QC 080000 as well as ISO 45001 system certification (updated from OHSAS 18001 in 2018) provides the foundations for the systematic management of GIGABYTE’s quality/environmental safety and health (EHS) policies. Independent third-party certification and audits were firstly completed by SGS in October, 2016, followed by the upgrade to ISO 45001 certification in 2019. The brand new environmental management perspective and SOP audits will serve to ensure the effectiveness of EHS and hazardous substance management mechanisms on our sites. They will also ensure that GIGABYTE’s product quality and services will continue to satisfy the requirements of our customers and related regulations.

The depletion of global resources spurred the introduction of ISO 14051 material flow cost accounting framework at our Nanping Factory in Taoyuan. Examining the environmental impact of business production processes and reducing the consumption of materials and energy at the systems level offers both economic and environmental benefits.

GIGABYTE conforms to the European Union WEEE Directive extending manufacturer responsibility. We have set up reverse logistics and recycling channels in Europe, North America and Taiwan. Consumers can check with us to find the closest recycling point to them and drop off any products they would like to discard. In this way, waste can be recycled and reused with an extended lifecycle, which makes energy and resource be used properly in a circular way.

Region Information
Taiwan In Taiwan, GIGABYTE's electronic products fall into the category of recycling materials, “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment,” including discarded televisions, discarded refrigerators, discarded washing machines, discarded air conditioners, discarded computers, and other discarded IT products such as laptops, tablets, motherboards, discs, displayers, printers, and keyboards. The E-waste recycling can be arranged by calling the hotline of the Environmental Protection Administration's Recycling Fund Management Board at 0800-085-717. It can also be arranged by contacting local cleanup crews via phone for pickup.
